On May 10, we held the first day of the “Ukraine is Ukraine” festival in Milan's city center.
The second lecture was dedicated to Ukrainian women — those who have influenced world history from the Middle Ages to the present and continue to shape it today. It was delivered by Nataliia Kryvda, professor at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
Among the figures mentioned was Khrystyna Alchevska, who founded the first Sunday school for women in Kharkiv in the mid-19th century. During her lifetime, she educated more than 15,000 women in eastern Ukraine.
The speaker also spoke about Milena Rudnytska, a pioneer of the feminist movement in Ukraine and a political activist who defended Ukraine at the League of Nations in matters related to pacification policies and the Holodomor.
Natalia Kryvda also highlighted the achievements of Maryna Viazovska, who in 2022 became only the second woman to receive the Fields Medal, one of the most prestigious awards in mathematics.
Alongside Natalia Kryvda, Ukrainian historian Yaroslav Hrytsak also spoke at the festival. The second part of “Ukraine is Ukraine” was further dedicated to the connection between Ukrainian ballet and the global ballet tradition, as well as to the story of travel blogger Sofia Yablonska and the remarkable places of Ukraine.
The event was held under the patronage of the Comune di Milano, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Italian Republic, the Consulate General of Ukraine in Milan, and the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
We were able to organize the event thanks to the contribution of Maryana Shafro and the support of our partners: Valeria Rodnyansky, Viktoria Boklag, POUSTOVIT, Nadiya ODV, Biosphere Corporation, and Truff Royal.
